-
The Bentham Boat club is the
‘father’ or ‘mother’ club to the student rowing club of University
College London.
-
It is an active rowing club for
alumni and friends of University College London
-
It is also an active social club,
with members entitled to attend all college rowing functions, such as the
Christmas dinner and the Annual dinner.
-
It is also a source of coaching,
financial and management expertise, for the benefit of current UCL students
-
It is also the centre of
fund-raising expertise for the student boat club.
-
The Bentham Boat Club rows out of
the boathouse used by current UCL students.
-
Bentham Boat Club members may use
all the student boats, provided they do not clash with student use, and
treat the equipment with due respect.
-
Membership is open to alumni of University College London, and
(subject to the approval of the committee) alumni of University of London
colleges (courtesy of UCL’s foundation statues in 1826 as the
‘University of London’).
-
Subject to the approval of the
committee, membership may also be open to alumni of other elite research
based UK Universities, and their foreign equivalent (such as the US Ivy
League).
-
The fee for membership will be set
by the committee, and should be paid by direct debit.
-
Members will be notified of any
change in fee, prior to alteration of debit.
-
The committee shall be made up of
club members who are willing to serve in the following capacities: captain;
membership, and Purple and Blue list; organiser of active rowing and boats;
organiser of social events; organiser of fund raising and sponsorship;
liaison with student club.
-
Committee posts will normally be
held for five years, following elections if necessary, with the entire
membership entitled to vote. Voting and canvassing may be by e-mail if
necessary.
-
In the event of a period of
non-involvement totaling six months, a committee member will be expected to
resign, to allow election or appointment of a replacement.
-
Members who represent the college at
Henley Royal, or Henley Women’s’ Regattas, or who in the opinion of the
committee, win in Bentham colours at a ‘quality’ regatta, or who achieve
an ‘excellent’ result in the Head of the River Race, or the Women’s
Head of the River Race, may be awarded colours, and entitled to wear the
Bentham Boat Club Henley Blazer.
-
The Bentham Blazer will be of a
design approved by both the Bentham Committee and the student committee, and
in the UCL colours of predominantly Royal Purple with a Wedgwood Blue
stripe, or stripes (on their near equivalents).
